Tool/Resource: HCP WU-Minn Consortium

September 24, 2013

The Human Connectome Project (HCP) WU-Minn consortium is pleased to announce our third quarterly (Q3) release of HCP image and behavioral data.

What’s in the HCP Q3 data release? The Q3 data include multimodal MRI and behavioral data collected from 87 healthy young adults scanned in spring 2012-2013. The current release expands the total (Q1-Q3) number of released healthy participant data for imaging and/or behavioral measures to 232, including 26 datasets that include the complete HCP protocol (T1w and T2w MRI, rfMRI, tfMRI, dMRI, and behavioral measures) and an over 200 more that include all modalities other than dMRI. The Q3 release also includes:

rfMRI data denoised of structured artifacts. Q1-Q3 resting-state fMRI data is now available that has been cleaned of structured noise through a new process that pairs independent component analysis (MELODIC) with a new FSL tool FIX, that automatically removes artifactual or “bad” components.

Individual task fMRI analysis on Q1-Q3 subjects. Individual (within-subject) tfMRI data analyzed for all Q1-Q3 subjects is now available.

Group-average functional data on two groups. Group average resting-state functional connectivity and task fMRI data on 40 Unrelated (U40) and 120 subjects, some of whom are related, (R120) are available. The large (33GB each) correlation matrix (“dense” connectome) files for full correlation and correlation with the mean gray signal regressed out, can be accessed remotely via Connectome Workbench, created locally from the Group-PCA Eigenmaps, or downloaded directly.

More behavioral and individual difference data. More fields of open access data including mental state and sleep scoring are available. Restricted data including handedness, color vision, visual acuity and sensitive restricted data including drug screen data for all Q1-Q3 subjects are available for qualified investigators who are approved for restricted access.

Q1/Q2 data patch and Data updates wiki. All known bugs and missing files in each HCP data release are being tracked on a wiki page and a patch script containing fixed data files for Q1/Q2 data is available on the ConnectomeDB splash page.

Improved image reconstruction. Improvements in the reconstruction algorithm that produce slightly less spatial blurring in the unprocessed images have been applied to dMRI and fMRI data for Q3 subjects scanned on or after April 27, 2013. Because the improvement significantly affects analysis of dMRI data, we are only releasing dMRI datasets for 26 Q3 subjects (some of whom are related) collected after the new reconstruction algorithm was implemented. dMRI images collected before April 27, 2013 are currently being reconstructed and will be available in late fall 2013.

Access Q3 data on the HCP website. Explore, download, or order the HCP Q3 dataset (~6.5TB of data!) via the ConnectomeDB database. Most HCP image and behavioral data is openly accessible to investigators worldwide who register and accept a limited set of Open Access Data Use Terms. Note: Please clear your browser cache before logging in to ConnectomeDB.
