This is just a stub. Add details to the definitions and add words that you want defined. If there is a disagreement about what something means, either include the disagreement in the definition or start a discussion on the topic and link to that discussion.

Resting-State Network (RSN)

A finite set of distributed spatial maps within which coherent brain activity can be demonstrated in the absence of an externally cued task. Please find several of them in:
Consistent resting-state networks across healthy subjects. Damoiseaux JS, Rombouts SA, Barkhof F, Scheltens P, Stam CJ, Smith SM, Beckmann CF. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2006 Sep 12;103(37):13848-53.

Default mode network

A grouping of brain regions that shows common correlations and anti-correlations of brain activity during a baseline state. For more details see:
Inaugural Article: A default mode of brain function Marcus E. Raichle, Ann Mary Macleod, Abraham Z. Snyder, William J. Powers, Debra A. Gusnard, and Gordon L. Shulman, Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2001 January 16; 98(2): 676–682.

Functional Connectivity

Any analysis method that uses functional imaging data to identify significant similarities between data points. This includes connectivity maps during a cognitive task or at rest. One of the simplest examples is testing whether two fMRI time series from different brain regions are significantly correlated.

NITRC also hosts a community discussion project regarding Functional Connectivity

Resting State connectivity

Functional connectivity studies performed when the brain is at rest.

Task Independent Fluctuations

Functional connectivity studies performed when the volunteer isn't doing any specific task and there is no assumed temporal pattern of activity. This can include resting state connectivity studies, but this term was used for this discussion group since it is broader and doesn't make any assumptions about what is or isn't a resting state. In addition, this can include connectivity studies were there is a task, but researchers try to remove all task-related signal changes and study connectivity of the remaining signal.
