What is the neurobureau ?
The Neuro Bureau is an international network of scientists and non-scientists that supports "open neuroscience" — embracing the ideas that data, methods, and ideas can be freely shared. The Neuro Bureau’s immediate goal is to establish a spirit and forum for open neuroscience, and to facilitate the translation of that ethos into action by conducting successful large open interdisciplinary collaborative efforts (see our projects page for a sample of initiatives). The Neuro Bureau resources are available on the NITRC webpages (in particular our wiki), through the neurobureau website and through our facebook, twitter and blog feeds.
How can I join ?
The first thing you can do is go to our NITRC page and click on "join the team" (at the bottom left of the page), and join our mailing lists (here). You can also *like* us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, sign up to our blog RSS feed, or just check in on this website every now and again. Being a member is as simple as being interested and allowing us to keep you informed of what the Neuro Bureau is up to, using your preferred social media/email method.
I am excited by your ideas and I want to *do* something. How do I get involved ?
Neuro Bureau activities revolve around projects, listed at brainhack.org. Each project is run by a dedicated work-group, with one or multiple project managers. If you find a neurobureau project that you like, just contact the project managers. You can also follow email discussions on the neurobureau list, maybe join the on-line neurobureau meetings and get involved as much as you want. You can also start a neurobureau project yourself by sending an email to the neurobureau mailing list, creating a page on brainhack and starting to recruit members for the work-group.
But what if I actually want to get super-involved ??
Whoa, it's nice to see such enthusiasm! The various activities of the neurobureau are coordinated by a council. The council runs an e-conference call about once a month, where the project leaders report on advancements of our projects, and discuss the next priorities. Members of the council are also involved in various administrative tasks, such as organizing the large group calls, updating the neurobureau website, etc. Being an active member of the council is entirely voluntary. All members receive an invitation for the large group calls, and can propose to add a point to the agenda.
I'm sold. And I want to meet you guys.
Now we're talking. One last thing about the neurobureau is that the members travel a lot and are big-time adepts of couch-surfing. Get in touch on the neurobureau list to find a couch.
Wait a minute, what's the catch ?
You have to wear our buttons! No, really, there is no catch, besides that we encourage you and any interested scientists inside and outside the neuroimaging community, as well as artists and researchers from related fields to bring their own initiatives. Please share The Neuro Bureau with others you think might be interested, and... let's be open about it.
FAQ section
Do I have to share my data to be a member? What's all that stuff about anyway?
No! You don't *have* to do anything to be a member...The NB makes recommendations for healthy, happy, open living, not mandates !
I don't do resting state, can I join?
Of course!
What if I want to leave?
Unlike us on Facebook, request to be removed from the mailing list, and if necessary, request that your name be removed from any webpages on which it is posted
I don't like that photograph of me, can you please take it down?
Please drop us an email (at...) and let us know, we'll see what we can do!
I want to come and stay in Berlin/New York/Montreal etc., can I sleep on your couch?
Send a request on the neurobureau mailing list. In these cities (and many more) it's highly likely you'll get a couch.
Are you guys making money off this?
Nope. We're planning to start a button & T-shirt buisness eventually, but at this stage our only reward is the promotion of (open) science. Really.
What's the story with Mike Milham's giant hands?
Good question. Please post on the neurobureau mailing list if you know the answer.
Is The Neuro Bureau only about functional connectivity?
The Neuro Bureau is what we make of it. To date, many of the projects we've been involved with have been focused on functional connectivity. Yet, we are open to being involved in any kind of neuroscientific activities. If there is something you'd love The Neuro Bureau to get involved with, just holler, or step up and start a new NB project yourself!
