Default Roles

When your tool or resource is registered with NITRC, there are several default member roles that are generated. As an administrator, you can modify these settings and create new roles. The following table shows the system-generated roles and their default permission settings.

Suggested Roles

NITRC was initially set up for software-based projects, but it has expanded to support many resources. The roles listed below may be more meaningful and appropriate for your group.

Permission Definitions

If you want to create a new role or change an existing one, it is very helpful to know the function of each permission setting. Below is a very basic description of each permission setting.

Tool/Resource-wide Admin

None: Member cannot access the overall tool/resource administration functions. There will be no "Admin" link in the tool/resource menu.
Admin: Member can access the overall tool/resource administration functions. There will be an "Admin" link in the tool/resource menu.

File Release System

Read: Member can browse and download files from released packages.
Admin: Member can create packages and upload files. There will be a files "Admin" link on the files pages.

SCM-Source Code Repository

No Access: Members cannot browse the source code repository.
Read: members can browse the source code repository, but they cannot commit files to the repository.
Write: Members can browse and commit files to the source code repository.

Document Manager

Read/Post: Members can browse documents and submit new documents for administrator approval.
Admin: Members can add/edit document groups, approve pending documents, and make other status changes to documents. There will be a docs "Admin" link on the docs pages.

Tool/Resource-wide Forum Admin

None: Member cannot administer the forum manager.
Admin: Member can add a new forum and edit all the existing forums. There will be a forums "Admin" link on the forums pages.

Each Tool/Resource Forum

No Access: Member will not see this forum listed on the Browse Forums page.
Read/Post: Member can browse this forum, read messages, and reply to messages. Member can start a new thread only if this is a public forum.
Post Private: Member can browse this forum, read messages, and reply to messages. Member can start a new thread even if this is a private forum.
Admin: Member can edit this forum. There will be an "Admin" link on this forum's pages.

Tool/Resource-wide Tracker Admin

None: Member cannot administer the tracker manager.
Admin: Member can add a new tracker and edit all existing trackers. There will be a tracker "Admin" link on the tracker pages.

Each Tool/Resource Tracker

No Access: Member will not see this tracker listed on the Browse Trackers page.
Read/Post: Member can browse this tracker and submit items to it. Member has a very limited ability to edit tracker items in this tracker.
Tech: Member can browse this tracker and submit items to it. Member has a slightly limited ability to edit tracker items in this tracker.
This user can be assigned to a tracker item. The member's name will appear in the "Assigned To" and "Assignee" lists.
Tech & Admin: In addition to the Tech permission described above, the member can edit this tracker. There will be an "Admin" link on this tracker's pages.
Admin only: Member can edit this tracker. There will be an "Admin" link on this tracker's pages.
Member cannot have tracker items assigned to him.

Tool/Resource-wide Task Manager Admin

None: Member cannot administer the task manager.
Admin: Member can add/edit subprojects. There will be a tasks "Admin" link on the tasks pages.

Each Tool/Resource Task Subproject

No Access: Members will not see this task subproject listed on the Browse Subprojects page.
Read: Member can browse this task subproject, but member cannot submit tasks to it. Member cannot edit tasks in this subproject.
Tech: Member can browse this task subproject, but member cannot submit tasks to it. Member cannot edit tasks in this subproject.
This member can be assigned to a task. The member's name will appear in the "Assigned To" and "Assignee" lists.
Tech & Admin: In addition to the Tech permission described above, the member can edit this task subproject. There will be an "Admin" link on this task subproject's pages.
Admin only: Member can edit this task subproject. There will be an "Admin" link on this task subproject's pages.
Member cannot have tasks assigned to him.
