Adding a News Bulletin
Tool/Resource News
Only tool/resource administrators can post news about their tools/resources. Tool/resource administrators can post a news bulletin directly through NITRC, or they can channel news to NITRC from an external news feed.
Submitting News Through NITRC
Tool/resource administrators can post news directly through NITRC. As a tool/resource administrator, you can access the Submit News page two ways:
- Select "News" from the tool/resource menu, and then click the "Submit News" link at the top of the Browse News page.
- Select "Summary" from the tool/resource menu, and then click the "Submit news" link in the Participate box.
Enter the required fields on the Submit News page and click the "Submit" button to post this news.
Required Fields—indicated by a red asterisk (*)
- Subject: Title or headline for your news.
- Details: News article, event information, or any text you would like to post as news.
All posts for your tool/resource will appear instantly in the Recent Activity section on your Tool/Resource Summary page and are sent to the site moderator for possible publication on the NITRC Home page. You may include URLs, but not HTML in your submissions. URLs that start with http://, https://, or ftp:// are made clickable. E-mail addresses are also made clickable.
Submitting News Through RSS Feed
Tool/resource administrators can direct NITRC to post news from an external news feed. As a tool/resource administrator, go to your News Admin page:
- From the Tool/Resource Admin page, click "News Admin" in the Tool Admin section.
- From the tool/resource pages, click the "News" menu link, then click "Admin" at the top of the page.
At the top of the News Admin page there is an input box for the URL for the external news feed you want to use. Enter the news feed URL and click the "Add RSS Feed" button. The name of the news feed will be displayed below the input box and news items from the feed will be displayed below that. These news items are also displayed in the Recent Activity section on your Tool/Resource Summary page and are sent to the site moderator for possible publication on the NITRC Home page. After this initial import of news items, NITRC will check every hour for updates to the news feed and will add or update posts as appropriate.
You may add more than one news feed. If you want to remove a news feed, simply click on the
in front of the feed name.
Home Page (NITRC Community) News
News bulletins posted by a tool/resource administrator automatically go to the site moderator for approval for publication on the NITRC Home page. Posts that are of special interest to the community may be approved by the site moderator and will appear on the NITRC Home page. All news approved for display on the Home page is also displayed on the NITRC Community News page.
If your tool/resource has chosen not to use the NITRC news manager or you are a registered user but not a tool/resource administrator, you may still submit news for possible posting on the NITRC Home page. To submit community news, click the News link under "Community" in the main menu, and then click the "Submit News" link at the top of the page. Enter the subject and details of your news, and then click the "Submit News" button. The news item will go to the site moderator for approval for publication on the NITRC Home page and the NITRC Community News page.
| Note: Only a portion of the news text (up to 250 characters) will appear on the Home page. You may hover the mouse over the text to see the full news bulletin. |
Modifying and Deleting a News Bulletin
A tool/resource administrator may edit or delete a news bulletin. From the Tool/Resource Admin page, click "News Admin" in the Tool Admin section; from the tool/resource pages, click the "News" menu link, then click "Admin" at the top of the page. Select the news bulletin that you wish to edit or delete from the list. You may edit the subject and the details of the news. If this news bulletin had been posted on the NITRC Home page, modifying it will remove the news from the Home page. If you want to delete the news item, select "Deleted" instead of "Displayed" and click the "Submit" button. This will delete the news item from the site.
