Many browsers support streamlined mechanisms of searching sites, often using the location bar or a specialized search box. NITRC provides OpenSearch description documents for browsers that are able to use them to configure custom searches. This and other techniques are described below.

Contents

Camino

Search Box

Camino recognizes NITRC's OpenSearch description documents, which make it easy to configure Camino to search NITRC directly. Point Camino to NITRC, and then open the search pull-down menu by clicking on the magnifying glass in the search box.

You can add "NITRC Tools/Resources" or "NITRC Related Web Pages" and configure Camino to search NITRC's tool/resource listings or NITRC's network of related web pages.

Select "Manage Search Engines..." from this menu to remove the NITRC searches from your search box.

Location Bar

Camino's location bar can be used for NITRC searches by configuring special bookmarks. Open the bookmark manager (Control-B) and use the "+" menu at the bottom to add a bookmark. Call the new bookmark "NITRC Tool/Resource Search". Select the new bookmark and edit its information (Control-I).

  • Name: NITRC Tool/Resource Search
  • Shortcut: nitrctr
  • Location: http://www.nitrc.org/search/?type_of_search=group&q=%s

You can now type "nitrctr" and search terms in the Camino location bar to search NITRC.

For NITRC's related web pages search, create another bookmark with the following name, shortcut, and location:

  • Name: NITRC Related Web Pages
  • Shortcut: nitrcrel
  • Location: http://www.nitrc.org/search/?type_of_search=crawler&q=%s

Chrome

To add NITRC searches to Chrome, right click in the address bar and select "Edit search engines...".

Enter a name, keyword, and URL for NITRC's tools and resources search.

  • Name: NITRC Tools/Resources
  • Keyword: nitrctr
  • URL: http://www.nitrc.org/search/?type_of_search=group&q=%s

Enter a name, keyword, and URL for NITRC's related web pages search.

  • Name: NITRC Related Web Pages
  • Keyword: nitrcrel
  • URL: http://www.nitrc.org/search/?type_of_search=crawler&q=%s

The keyword you choose can then be used in the address bar to initiate a search.

Firefox

Search Box

Firefox recognizes NITRC's OpenSearch description documents, which make it easy to configure Firefox to search NITRC directly. Point Firefox to NITRC, and then open the search pull-down menu by clicking on the magnifying glass current search icon at the left of the search box.

You can add "NITRC Tools/Resources" or "NITRC Related Web Pages" and configure Firefox to search NITRC's tool/resource listings or NITRC's network of related web pages.

Select "Manage Search Engines..." from this menu to remove the NITRC searches from your search box.

Location Bar

Control-click (Mac) or right-click (Windows) on the search field on NITRC's home page, then select "Add a Keyword for this Search". Choose a keyword such as "nitrctr"; you can then use Firefox's location bar to search NITRC's tool/resource listings.

This creates a bookmark which can be duplicated and edited in the bookmark library to use NITRC's related web pages search. Change type_of_search=group in the bookmark location to type_of_search=crawler and choose another keyword such as "nitrcrel".

Internet Explorer

To add NITRC searches to Internet Explorer's search box (for those versions that have the search box), right click in the search box and follow "Add Search Providers" to one or both of the NITRC search options.

These searches can then be accessed in the search box to search NITRC's tool/resource listings or NITRC's network of related web pages.
