News is generally used to announce software releases, milestones, or anything significant about the tool/resource. All news for a tool/resource is posted by its administrators. NITRC Community news can be submitted by all registered users, but will only be posted if approved by the NITRC moderator. Clicking the tool/resource menu "News" link shows the Browse News page with a list of available news postings for the tool/resource. The Browse News page for NITRC Community can be accessed through the News link under the Community main menu.

Monitoring/Subscribing to All News

Tool/Resource

Make sure you never miss an important announcement for your favorite tool/resource by monitoring its news postings. Any registered user can monitor the news for any tool/resource. Click "Monitor News" at the top of the Browse News page to enable news monitoring for that particular tool/resource. You will receive an e-mail whenever news is posted as long as you are monitoring news for this tool/resource.

To stop receiving e-mail notifications for posted news, click "Stop Monitoring" at the top of the Browse News page.

NITRC Community

To keep up with the latest NITRC Community news, you can subscribe to the news feed. Any user can subscribe to the NITRC Community news RSS feed. Click "Subscribe to News" at the top of the Browse News page to subscribe to the feed with your browser or your favorite RSS reader.

Viewing a News Bulletin

Any user can read a posted news bulletin. From the Browse News page, click on a headline to see the full posting. Registered users may comment on the news bulletin, and any user may view these comments. Registered users may also monitor comments to a news bulletin.

Commenting on a News Bulletin

Any registered user can comment on a news bulletin by posting a new comment or by replying to an existing one.

To post a new comment, while viewing the news bulletin, click the "Comment" button above or below the comments section. Enter the title and message for your comment and click the "Submit" button to post your comment.

To reply to an existing comment, while viewing the news bulletin, click the "Reply" button or the "Quote & Reply" button next to the comment you want to reply to. The title is prepopulated, so you just need to add your comment and click the "Submit" button to post it.

Note: News uses Forums functionality. Please refer to the Posting a [Forum] Message section of this User Guide for more details on posting comments.

Subscribing to a News Bulletin

By subscribing to a news bulletin forum, any registered user may receive an e-mail notice when a user comments on that particular news bulletin. While viewing the news bulletin, click the "Subscribe to Forum" link above the comments section. This news bulletin forum will be listed in the "Subscribed Forums" section of your My Personal Page.

To stop receiving e-mail notifications of posted comments, click the "Unsubscribe from Forum" link above the comments section or click on the trash can icon next to the news headline in the "Subscribed Forums" section of your My Personal Page.

Saving Your Place

If you post a comment or reply to a comment, your place is automatically saved, but you may also save you place manually. Once you have selected a new bulletin, click "Save Place" (above the list of comments) to record the current date and time. Any comments that are posted after this date and time are highlighted (the title is displayed in bold) when you return to this news bulletin. The titles will remain highlighted until you save your place again, either manually or by commenting or replying to a comment.
