NITRC Contract Requirements

- Manage and disseminate community-based vocabularies and ontology

NITRC supports an ontology project called Resource Ontology Discussion Group where the community can manage, communicate and disseminate information, tools and data regarding ontology efforts, broadly. This project includes participation from NITRC, BIRN, and NCBC.

Ontology/Vocabulary

- Ontology Discussion Group project
 - BIRNLEX and NCBC

NITRC has a structured vocabulary Tool/Resource Function description. (see http://www.nitrc.org/plugins/wiki/index.php? NitrcKeywords &id=10&type=g version V1.1) This is a working starting point based upon prior experiences with the IATR. The NITRC vocabulary can, will and is evolving. The NCBC has developed a similar resource description, and efforts are underway to homogenize these descriptions.

Once these major changes to effect NITRC/NCBC harmony are achieved, the NITRC-supported vocabulary will be disseminated in a number of fashions: 1) as a separate downloadable (Protege) file from NITRC, 2) the resource descriptions will be added to BIRNLEX. Using BIRNLEX as an outlet source is a major advantage as BIRNLEX is designed to be compliant with the broader national and international ontology efforts such as NCBO, OBO, OBI, etc.

NITRC Ontology

Like the NCBC 'Required Resource Description Fields' (http://www.loni.ucla.edu/twiki/bin/view/CCB/NCBC_ToolIntegration_XMLtology_Meeting_071806_RequiredFields) NITRC has the following descriptions for all listed resources:

  • Name, txt, single line
  • Description, txt, multiline
  • URL, txt
  • Stage, typed list (Development status in NITRC)
  • Keywords, from a fixed vocabulary, with other
  • License, typed list, with other

Other elements in the NCBC Required fields include

  • Organization

for which NITRC does not yet have an official capture point for, and

  • Resource Ontology Label
  • Type of Resource, typed list

which are both similar to the fixed vocabulary top level selections, so, by definition, keyword selection in NITRC captures this descriptor.

NITRC, also captures the following essential categories of information per tool, that might be considered part of the 'minimal' description:

  • Intended Audience, fixed list,
  • Natural Language, fixed list
  • Operating System, fixed list
  • Programming language, fixed list
  • Data Formats, fixed list
  • Resource contact person, registered NITRC user
