NITRC News Group Forum: a-decade-of-nitrc-ce--what-it-built--and-what-comes-next

62,000+ downloads later, NITRC-CE is entering its sunset. Here's what's still available.

A Decade of NITRC-CE — and What Comes Next

In 2012, getting FSL, AFNI, FreeSurfer, and SPM running together on one machine was a week of your life. Then, after updating all the software versions, sometimes you would not even have enough compute power to run the study. We heard horror stories of labs chaining multiple computers together overnight in order to get a study done. As a result, we created the NITRC Computational Environment (NITRC-CE), making that headache all go away with a download and cloud compute option. Since then, NITRC-CE has been downloaded for local use more than 64,500 times, used in the cloud for over 700,000 compute hours (over 80 years of time!), been used to teach workshops, run hackathons, and given labs without a cluster a real path into cloud computing.

NITRC-CE is now entering a sunset status, largely because the field caught up to our pioneering service. Containers, BIDS Apps, and purpose-built community platforms now do what a monolithic VM once did, and do it better. That's a good outcome.
You can still use it. Two options remain: launch it on AWS from the published AMI IDs, or run it locally from the downloadable image on your own infrastructure. NITRC-CE LITE is retired, and there are no planned new releases; existing releases, release notes, and documentation stay available. Please cite it as RRID: SCR_002494.

Where do we go from here? NITRC-CE started because we spotted an unmet need. We'd like to find the next one from you rather than guess at it.

What slows you down? What do you have a fragile workaround for? What can't you find on NITRC that you wish you could?
