I enabled the data collection for the file downloads in my projects with the expectation that I will be able to have access to that information. Is this indeed the intended function? If yes, how can I get access to that?

Great idea -- I'll mark this a feature request now and open an internal ticket.

Thanks very much Christian for the quick answer.  That works.  It would be brilliant if there is a web interface to this information and if we can use it to populate our mailing list.

Go to Admin -> Stats, then follow "File Release Download Report" for a summary.  At the bottom of the summary page is the option to download the details as a CSV file.
