Overall Ease vs. Functionality:  5 out of 5
Download/Installation Ease:  4 out of 5

Ratings/Long-term Prospects Comments:  I think for accuracy of group averaging that FreeSurfer is your best bet. However, it is not for the computer illiterate. I would find it very difficult to navigate FreeSurfer without having someone who has used it before me show me what I need to do. That said, the FreeSurfer mailing list is an excellent resource as is the mail archive. Another great benefit of FreeSurfer is that it is very easy to automate many processing streams. If you know what you are doing, you can save a lot of time. I would definitely recommend FreeSurfer but I would qualify that you should find an experienced user before you try to surf on your own.

Ratings/Long-term Prospects Comments:  -amazing support from MGH group -VERY automated but may need manual editing -recent paper (Morey et al., 2009; NeuroImage) underscores subcortical segmentation may be less valid than some realize -can create study/site specific atlas for parcellation or segmentation

Ratings/Long-term Prospects Comments:  Does what it says it does, but I have no idea what is going on under the hood of that massive recon-all script. Wonderful for cortical surface and white matter surface extraction, and for surface based analysis.
