[Neurobureau-hubs] URGENT: feedback request on neurobureau Brain-Art launch...

I hope I'm not reading an old version of landing page but I have some
suggestions, as always :b

On the main Neurobureau page, the first sentence seems incomplete...

The Neuro Bureau <http://neurobureau.projects.nitrc.org/> is a forum and
collaborative initiative that supports "open neuroscience" — embracing the
concepts data, methods, and ideas sharing.

Do you mean something like:

The Neuro Bureau <http://neurobureau.projects.nitrc.org/> is a forum and
collaborative initiative that supports "open neuroscience" — embracing the
idea that data, methods, and ideas can be freely shared within the
community.
(I tried to reword it with "concepts" still in there but couldn't get it to
work). Maybe you don't need the "within the community" part.

I think the next sentence needs to change a bit too:
Translating the *ethos of open neuroscience* into action is an exciting
challenge to the way we *currently* work and publish.
[replace "often" with currently. If you think that's too strong maybe just
leave it out.]

How about just saying "The Neuro Bureau's immediate goal" - why is there are
separation between "we" and "The Neuro Bureau" - we *are* The Neuro Bureau
are we not?? :)

Some more suggested edits to that paragraph:

The Neuro Bureau's immediate goal is to establish a forum and a platform for
"open neuroscience," and to facilitate the translation of that ethos into
action by conducting successful large open interdisciplinary collaborative
efforts — such as releasing the preprocessed
version<http://neurobureau.projects.nitrc.org/ADHD200/> of
the ADHD-200 competition
dataset<http://fcon_1000.projects.nitrc.org/indi/adhd200/>.
The Brain-Art Competition<http://neurobureau.projects.nitrc.org/BrainArt_back/BrainArt_back/Competition.html>
is
likewise an effort to bring attention to the more creative,
aesthetically-oriented aspects of our field, and to publicize and encourage
creative developments taking place at the nexus of art and neuroimaging.

We encourage interested scientists inside and outside [*of*] the
neuroimaging community, as well as artists and researchers from related
fields to bring their own initiatives. Please share [this page, or] The
Neuro Bureau with others you think might be interested, and... let's be open
about it.
PLEASE!! get rid of the 'of' there! It's probably a US-english vs.
english-english thing but i hate it when inside/outside is used
in conjunction with "of"

On the mission statement page:

The following efforts provide [early] examples of how open neuroscience
principles can be implemented in the neuroimaging community, [as well as in
some cases] and the value of grassroots initiatives.
[delete stuff in brackets]

However, these *endeavors* are just the beginning. *To realize the true
potential of open neuroscience, we need to alter the culture of
[neuro]scientific research — in particular, we need to foster a shift
towards a focus on what can be gained communally through increased
collaboration, and away from a focus on what can be gained or lost at the
individual level. It is only through the shared efforts of the scientific
community that open neuroscience can succeed. *
[I make this suggestion as I felt that perhaps it's a little strong to say
"without regard" - are you asking too much?? perhaps toning it down a little
bit will help people who see us as too extreme. like Tea partiers.]

Not sure if the "at stages far earlier than is common practice" is necessary
for point 4

In the attainment of goals part:

Efforts such as the open release of pre-processed forms of theADHD-200
Global Competition <http://neurobureau.projects.nitrc.org/ADHD200> data
provide an initial example of our vision.
I think you're beginning to sound a little grandiose... Perhaps just stating
"The open release of pre-processed ADHD-200 Global Competition data
represents a Neuro Bureau initiative that is in line with this goal."
Don't forget to change "computationally" to computational in that point.
I can tell when Mike's had a hand in writing something because the word
"initial" appears everywhere :b

It's silly, but in point 3 I would say
building relationships among members
rather than relationship building

The way they're currently written, the last two points sound like goals,
rather than ways to achieve the goals..

4) * By promoting *open *question-and-answer* exchanges among community
members through The Neuro Bureau forums, and *broadcasting* "breaking
knowledge" via forum exchanges <http://www.nitrc.org/forum/?group_id=383> and
social *media* (e.g.,
facebook<http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Neuro-Bureau/153692997984716>
, twitter <http://twitter.com/#!/TheNeuroBureau>,
blogging<http://neurobureau.projects.nitrc.org/NeuroBureau/Blog.html>).
[In addition, it is our hope that The Neuro Bureau can come to form a
community-specific incarnation of ‘couch surfing’. - Doesn't this last point
fit better with number 3 and the relationship-building stuff?]

5) *By increasing* the imaging community’s focus on the sharing of tools
and media capable of innovating means of expression among neuroscientists.
*As a first step,* The Neuro Bureau will be launching an annual Brain-Art
Competition<http://neurobureau.projects.nitrc.org/BrainArt_back/BrainArt_back/Competition.html>
.

Sorry for taking so long....
