Melissa Kline Struhl (Research Scientist, MIT) joins us from the Early Childhood Cognition Lab, where she serves as the Executive Director for the Lookit Tean, and Director of Children Helping Science. Title: "Psych-DS: A data standard for datasets in the behavioral sciences." Abstract: This talk will discuss Psych-DS, a data standard for the behavioral sciences that is designed to be usable by a single researcher during any stage of the data lifecycle. Especially when datasets are small (that is, smaller than e.g. a brain imaging dataset), we are often not explicitly taught best practices for working with data in ways that minimize error and lead to FAIR data sharing. This leads to both a lack of consensus about how to share and organize data in these fields, and difficulty with the practical sharing of the datasets that underlie our research. Psych-DS is a method for organizing psychological and behavioral data, which aims to satisfy FAIR principles for data sharing. Like the successful BIDS neuroimaging standard, Psych-DS has a validator tool that lets you check whether your dataset is organized according to the Psych-DS standard, and we are developing tools for common programming languages and platforms in the psych sciences. I will also share some example datasets, and am very interested in hearing stories from the attendees about your particular challenges in deciding how to organize your data.
