I've worked with the Anatomist in the past and it's a powerful tool
for surface and
volumetric rendering for cortical image scans.
I would strongly recommend going with VTK for GPU rendering since it
offers a level
of functionality that is customizable and can give powerful renderings
of various
parametric surface evaluations, in short, it allows for specific data
types to be analyzed,
rendered and clinical interpretation far more easier.
