I'm glad to hear you had no trouble with the imaging.  I work on TCIA (the imaging site) and not directly with TCGA, but I do know some basics about it.  There are two different data sets in the TCGA Data Portal.  I'm pretty certain the public set contains everything most researchers would care about.  There is a small set of protected data though.  You may want to double check the search criteria you used on their site ( https://tcga-data.nci.nih.gov/tcga/dataA... ) and ensure you use the option to get data from the Public Access Tier (it's on the top right of the page).  This is probably why it's asking for a login.
