Adding more participants and sessions to a preprocessed incomplete dataset

Dear Alfonso and CONN users,

We have a study with ongoing data collection. We've already started a CONN project with the first batch of subjects and preprocessed those subjects/sessions, ready for 2nd analysis. Now with more particpants, and later scan sessions of those first batch subjects, can we add those to this same CONN project and just preprocess these new subjects and sessions? We are uploading with the BIDS format, just resting state scans, using CONN 20b.

Thank you!

RE: Adding more participants and sessions to a preprocessed incomplete dataset

Dear Amy,

Importing partial data from a BIDS dataset is perfectly fine althoug a bit difficult to do automatically, sorry.  I would recommend simply adding the new subjects and the new sessions manually to your existing project. After that:

1) to preprocess your new subjects simply run preprocessing normally and then uncheck the 'all subjects' option and select only the new subjects before starting your preprocessing pipeline. (and similarly if you want to preprocess your new sessions only for all or a subset of subjects; keep in mind when preprocessing the new sessions that you will typically want to exclude from your preprocessing pipeline the 'structural ...' steps if the structural data for these subjects has already been preprocessed)

and 2) to import, denoise, and run 1st-level analyses on the new added data simply go through the corresponding "Apply & Continue" steps in the CONN gui selecting the option that reads "do not overwrite (skip already-processed subjects/ROIs)" so that CONN will not repeat the steps already performed on the already-processed data.

In general, if adding new subjects & sessions is something that you plan to do often, then it would perhaps be worth considering automating these steps using batch scripts rather than relying on repeating these steps each time (it will take additional time to learn to create these scripts and set them up the first time, but then it will make repeating these steps when necessary simpler and less error-prone). On the other hand, if this is something that will only happen once, then you may also want to consider simply importing the entire new data to a new project and preprocessing&analyzing it entirely there from scratch (that will take some additional time having to re-process your already-processed data, but it will save you time having to deal with the specifities of importing and processing different subsets of the data).

Hope this helps, and let me know if you run into any issues

Alfonso
