NIBIB e-Advance: Software Suite Improves Parkinson's Surgery Posted By: David Kennedy - Sep 10, 2010Tool/Resource: NITRC Community Software Suite Improves Parkinson's Surgery: August 31, 2010 When first approved by the U.S. FDA in 1998 as a therapy for movement disorders, deep brain stimulation surgery was a marathon 12-hour surgery. Steps included electro-stimulation to map the target sites and insert electrodes, a process that sometimes took 6 to 10 passes to complete. Now researchers at Vanderbilt University have developed a database and suite of software tools that automate preoperative planning, operative placement, and postoperative programming of a patient’s pulse generator.
