Not sure about that, do you get the same error when simply trying to create a figure in Matlab (e.g. type "imagesc(randn(1000))")? In case it helps my recommendation would be to try instead VNC or equivalent, since that is often considerably faster (and a bit less prompt to issues) than X11 window forwarding, but perhaps somebody more knowledgeable about these issues could offer some pointers?
